Excerpt:

Yielding to Scripture means recognizing its authority. Over and over again the psalmists recognize the authority of God’s Word. At least twice the author of Psalm 119 says that he “trembles” before Scripture (Psalm 119:120, 161). That should be your attitude as well when you come before God’s Word either in church or in your personal devotions. You should approach the Bible with awe, respect, and wonder, recognizing that it is God’s authoritative message to humans in every age. The Bible teaches that God esteems the man or woman who approaches his Word in humble expectation: “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word” (Isaiah 66:2). What else does accepting the authority of God’s Word mean? It means trusting it more than your own judgment. Once again, human judgment is notoriously unreliable. Every day millions of people make choices that seem right to them at the time, but that in the end lead to destruction. Naturally, this is exactly what the Bible says: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12). The good news is that you do not need to be the victim of your own best (or perhaps worst!) judgment. Instead, by making the principles contained in God’s Word your ultimate authority, you can preserve your life, avoid sin, bless your family, avoid Satan’s snares, and most importantly, bring honor to God in the way you live. Decide now that God’s Word will have absolute control of your life. Decide now that you will do what it says in every situation, even when doing so feels painful, which it will from time to time.
